The Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ prototipo has obtained the FIVA World Motoring Heritage Award during the 2016th edition of Concorso d'Eleganza of Villa d'Este, a prestigious recognition with the patronage of UNESCo for the semi-preserved restoration of the car, found at the end of 2014 in Philadelphia, in the US.
This is the fist Giulietta Coda Tronca never built and it has carried out activities of prototype for the develop of a little sport car series set up by Carrozzeria Zagato of Milan. It's the last evolution of the Alfa Zagato fo 1290cc from the second half of the 50s and it's the first car where Ercole Spada, the designer author of the aereodinamic lines of the car, and Elio Zagato set the record of 230 km/h in Milan Bergamo highway.
During the test, the revolutionary design "Coda Tronca" earned 20 km/h to the Giulietta, made him record a time of 16 seconds less in the flying kilometers.
From that moment, the legend of Coda Tronca was born, which is the first implementation in the series production of the Coda Kamm, already developed in the 30s. Spada still remembers those moments with great enthusiasm: to honor his contribute, at the Concorso d'Eleganza of Villa d'Este, he walked with the car during the saturday's parade.
The SZT chassis #170 has been trasformed from a round tale to a coda tronca: the good condition of the preservation has let glimpse, the inside of the bodywork, whre the car has been cut off to make it a coda tronca from a round tale. The interiors, a blue semi leather entirely preserved, are the same where Elio and Ercole made their time trials.
Only half of the car was restored to show the efficiency of the technics used in order to maintain the absolute originality and to bring back the paint as it was before.
The Fédeération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens with the patronage of UNESCO awarded the effort made to maintain the originality of the car, thus giving greater emphasis to the incredible story of this extraordinary Alfa Romeo.
